Estelle LAVERNE

Erwine studied art and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, while Estelle studied fashion design and fabric design at New York University. Together, they began their careers in interior design, working for Estelle's furniture and home décor boutique in New York.

The Lavernes' style was characterized by organic forms and abstract motifs. They were influenced by the modernist movement in Europe and incorporated materials such as wood, glass, metal and leather into their designs.

Their best-known creations are the "Sling" chair (1934), the "Amoeba" chaise longue (1946), the "New Deal" chair (1933) and the "Elastic" chair (1948). The Lavernes also designed fabrics for companies such as Schumacher and Pausa.

After Erwine's death in 1951, Estelle continued to work as a textile designer and taught interior design. She died in 1996 at the age of 100.
