About this vintage design furniture
“The Sena”, Josep Mª Vayreda Canadell (1932-2001) - Catalonia, Spain
Exquisite view of the Seine River as it passes through Paris. In the foreground, some freight ships moored on the right bank. While the river runs through the center of the composition, one of the famous bridges of Paris rises above it and, in the third plane, the Île de la Cité, from which the Notre-Dame Cathedral can be seen silhouetted in the distance .
Josep Maria Vayreda Canadell (1932-2001) was a post-war Spanish artist, known for his landscapes, urban and interior, with a very unique style that focuses on the light and texture of his surroundings. His depiction of light and muted palettes give his paintings an ethereal quality.
Member of an Olot family saga of artists, in which his great-uncle Joaquim Vayreda, founder of the so-called Olot Landscape School, stood out, he left as a legacy a large collection of oil paintings in which he captured his particular vision of landscapes of cities like Olot, Girona, Cadaqués, Venice or Paris, and cafe interiors and terraces. Although his connection with the Olot School was very close, the painter, who signed his works as Vayreda C., never completely adhered to the aesthetic premises of that movement and leaned towards a very personal realism.
During a stage of his career he entered the world of abstraction and informalism, to return at the end of the 1950s to figuration, not as a break with the previous stage but as a synthesis: his is a figuration structured based on of an arrangement of geometric shapes. In his paintings he captured his personal vision of the world.
His first exhibition took place at the Sala Jardí in Barcelona, in 1958. That same year he moved to Paris, where both his fame and his clientele increased. Among his first clients were Queen Paola of Belgium and actors such as Glenn Ford and Fred MacMurray, but the person responsible for his definitive international projection was the American collector Jerome Soloman.
Vayreda exhibited his works in numerous European cities, such as London and Paris, and North America, including Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and New York, where he is especially appreciated.
