Peter BEHRENS

Born in Hamburg, Behrens studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and worked briefly for the French architect Hector Guimard in Paris. In 1899, he joined the office of Berlin architect Karl Bernhard and began to make a name for himself with his architectural and design work.

Behrens was a founding member of the Deutscher Werkbund, a German association of industrial designers and artists, in 1907. In 1909, he was hired by AEG (Allgemeine Elektricitäts-Gesellschaft) to design industrial buildings and products for the company. It was at this time that he began working on the design of modern industrial buildings, which have often been regarded as precursors of modern architecture.

Among his most famous achievements are AEG's power plant in Berlin (1909-1910), the company's headquarters in Berlin (1910-1912), and the Behrens House in Darmstadt (1901), considered one of the earliest examples of modern architecture in Germany.

Behrens also designed products for AEG, such as lamps and electrical appliances, as well as patterns for the company's glassworks. He taught at the Düsseldorf School of Fine Arts and was director of the Munich School of Arts and Crafts from 1922 to 1927.

Behrens died in Berlin in 1940, leaving behind him an important legacy in the world of architecture and industrial design.
