About this vintage design furniture
This set of six champagne glasses, designed by Peter Behrens for Benedikt von Poschinger and dating from 1898, embodies a deft blend of innovation and aesthetics. Each glass features a curved dome of transparent glass mounted on a long stem of optically blown glass of varying thickness. The optical pattern, obtained by the glassblower by pressing the glass mass into a mold fitted with vertical lamellae, lends a singular depth to these pieces. The flowing lines, graceful curves of the glasses and subtle use of color on the feet perfectly illustrate the aestheticism of Art Nouveau. All six glasses are in excellent condition.
Known as the father of modern industrial design, architect, designer, graphic artist and typographer Peter Behrens (1868-1940) was one of the most influential German designers of the 20th century. A founding member of the Munich Secession, he also co-founded the Deutscher Werkbund (German Craftsmen's Association), which paved the way for the Bauhaus movement. His emblematic achievements include the AEG turbine factory in Berlin, the Borsig power plant in Berlin and the German pavilion at the 1902 Turin Exhibition.
