George NELSON

The designer is responsible for many 20th-century icons. His most famous creations include the Marshmallow sofa (1956), particularly original in its curves and colors, the MAA chair (1958) in fiberglass and chromed steel, and the Coconut seat (1954). Biography George Nelson was born in the United States in 1908. After studying architecture at the prestigious Yale University, he flew to Rome, where he completed his training at the American Academy from 1932 to 1934. He became interested in European architecture and modern art. From 1935 to 1944, he worked as an editor for the journal Architectural Forum. His article on home construction and furniture design caught the attention of Herman Miller's director, D.J. DePree. Nelson soon became the company's design director. He convinced design greats such as Charles & Ray Eames to work for the famous publisher. At the same time, the designer founded his own agency in 1946 and began a close collaboration with Vitra in 1957.
