Achille CASTIGLIONI

He was responsible for over 150 pieces of furniture, many of which he designed with his two brothers. They worked around a rational approach to function, while incorporating humor and a minimalist spirit, as in the case of the Luminator lamp (1955). Inspired by everyday objects, the Stella stool (1957) and the Mezzadro stool (1957) are legendary pieces of design. Biography Achille Castiglioni was born in Italy in 1918. He graduated in architecture from Milan Polytechnic in 1944. He joined the Milan studio of his two brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo. Architectural projects went into crisis during the war, and they began designing furniture for leading Italian publishers. Livio left the studio in 1952. The collaboration with his brother was fruitful, but came to an end in 1968, when Pier Giacomo passed away. Castiglioni continued his work as a furniture designer. At the same time, he shared his knowledge with students at the Turin and Milan Polytechnics. Considered one of the most important designers of the 20th century, he received no less than seven Compasso d'Oro awards.
