About this vintage design furniture
Rutgerus Johannes (Ru) de Gier (Rotterdam, 1921 – 2004) was a Dutch sculptor and painter. He was a son of bank worker Jacobus de Gier and Catharina van der Most. De Gier drew from an early age. During the razzia of Rotterdam during the Second World War, he was arrested and sent to Germany. He came into contact with sculpture. After his return to Rotterdam, he made work from fragments of rubble. On the advice of an artist, he visited the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts. De Gier worked with stone, metal and wood and made wall reliefs, small sculptures and free-standing statues, among other things. He also contributed to the restoration of the Laurenskerk. After he had heart problems, he made the switch to painting in his late 60s. Ru de Gier lived and worked all his life in Rotterdam, where he died in 2004.
This work is a rare design wall decoration and dates from 1987. It is in amazing good condition.
