Bust of Brigitte Bardot as Marianne - Alain Aslan Patinated plaster Signed and stamped by SPADEM Circa 1960 H63xW34xD23cm The bust of Marianne is one of the symbols of the French Republic. It represents most often a woman, called Marianne, wearing a Phrygian cap. It was during the French Revolution that this representation appeared for the first time as a symbol of freedom. Thereafter, the image of Marianne has evolved over the centuries with many different representations. Nowadays, some personalities lend their image to Marianne: Brigitte Bardot or Laetitia Casta. The bust of Marianne has become an essential element of the symbol of the Republic in all public buildings: City Halls, Prefectures, Courts, etc...
