George Nelson

The designer created several iconic pieces of furniture. For example, he designed the Marshmallow sofa (1956) which is very original thanks to its curves and colors, the MAA chair (1958) in fiberglass and chrome steel but also the Coconut seat (1954). Biography George Nelson was born in the United-States. After he studied architecture at the famous University of Yale, he went to Rome where he completed his training (1932-1934). He became interested in European architecture and modern art. From 1935 to 1944, he worked as a writer for the ‘Architectural Forum’ magazine. He wrote an article dedicated to residential construction and to furniture design which seduced the director of Herman Miller, D.J. Depree. After that, Nelson was named as a Design Director for the company. He convinced several great designers to work with Herman Miller, such as Charles & Ray Eames. In parallel, he founded his own studio in 1946 and started collaboration with Vitra in 1957.
