Oswald HAERDTL

He studied architecture and decorative arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he was influenced by the ideas of Josef Hoffmann and the Vienna Secession. He worked in his brother's furniture workshop before becoming a professor at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Haerdtl was known for his minimalist, functionalist approach to design, characterized by the use of simple geometric shapes, natural materials and sober colors. He created furniture, lighting and decorative objects for prestigious clients such as the Lobmeyr glass company and the Augarten porcelain factory.

One of his most famous projects is the H-259 armchair, designed in 1953 for the Thonet company. This armchair, which consists of two simple curved forms, has become a symbol of modern Austrian design.

Haerdtl was also active as an interior architect, designing spaces for stores and restaurants, as well as private residences. He died prematurely in 1955, leaving behind him an important legacy in the world of Austrian design.
