Gaetano Pesce Vesuvio espresso machine. Designed in 198889 and produced in 1993. This rare beauty has never been used and is in perfect condition. Made in Italy. Signature stamped on the bottom of the base. The Vesuvio has not been produced for a long time. The Vesuvio coffee maker is based on the traditional Italian "Napolitana" style coffee maker and, of course, Mount Vesuvius in Naples. In a 1993 New York Times article, Susanne Slesin notes that Mr. Pesce disdains all coffee makers designed and manufactured since the Bauhaus. "Too abstract and formal," he says, "I wanted an object that spoke to me more about reality." Pesce believes that the future of design lies in "feeling emotion". "We need to give society something it needs and that people need to develop a relationship with the objects around them," he said. Pesce originally planned to change the color of the resin around the top each year of production, so collectors could date their Vesuvio. It will be shipped internationally with insurance in a custom-made wooden crate. The cost of shipping is included in the box.
