About this vintage design furniture
Sculpture "Dame Art Déco", Demetre Chiparus, 20th c. - France
Exquisite Art Deco sculpture by Demetre Chiparus (1886 - 1947) depicts, with timeless charm, a graceful lady accompanied by a parrot and a turkey. It reflects one of the most popular themes of the 1920s, the appreciation of the female form. The young woman is shown in motion, appearing to rise as a parrot perches on her hand to eat what is offered. She is richly dressed, richly decorated, with subtle folds emphasizing her movement. The decoration is completed by her hat, matching her delicate shoes. The marble base is composed of two types of marble, green and yellow.
At this time, women were becoming the main protagonists of the cultural and social scene, and this was reflected in Chiparus' work. It's about a woman fighting for her freedom and wanting to find her own personality.
Demetre Chiparus, one of the greatest names in Romanian sculpture, presented an innovative style in the 1920s, distinguished by its decorative character, luxury and elegance. At an early age, he moved to Paris to complete his training at the École des Beaux-Arts. He then began to develop his own language in the Art Deco style, with a first series of decorative sculptures of children, exhibited at the 1914 Paris Salon. Later, when he had acquired a mature style, he began to draw inspiration from Russian ballet, French theater and early silent film productions, producing mainly works depicting women, such as ballet and cabaret dancers. Chiparus' pieces were made in foundries and factories that were also used by his contemporaries, such as Edmond Etling's or, later, J. Lehmann's in Las Neveux.
Art Deco is a purely decorative movement. In their works, artists generally did not seek to express feelings or emotions, but rather to create objects of attractive, balanced design that reflected the times and society in which they lived. Russian ballets played a key role in the development of this movement, as their stagings had a major influence on fashion and decorative design. Authors such as Demetre Chiparus and Paul Philippe represented this explosion of color and expressivity, inspired above all by the works of Sergei Diaghilev, Vaslav Nijisky and Ida Rubinstein. For example, the work "Danseuse au cerceau", created in 1928, was inspired by Boncza's magnificent dancer Zoula.
