About this vintage design furniture
A Sing Sing Sing armchair designed by Shiro Kuramata, Pastoe edition, The Netherlands 1986. The Sing Sing Sing chair is an iconic chair, crafted from tubular steel and expanded steel mesh, designed in 1985 and mainly produced in larger editions by XO in France. This is for a chair produced for the 1986 Pastoe edition of the piece, which was a remarkably smaller production. The piece has signs of aging, such as a minor rusting spot on the base and a crack to the chrome on one armrest. We priced the piece accordingly.
Shiro Kuramata (1931-1991) created a fluid exchange between Japanese design philosophy and methodology and European postmodern design through his work. Initially, he received traditional woodworking training. However, his perspective shifted when he attended the Kuwasawa Design School, where Isamu Kenmochi guided him in reimagining Japanese woodworking traditions using modern materials. Kuramata’s designs utilize materials with various characteristics like reflectivity, transparency, translucency, opacity, and tactile qualities. Each design carefully matches the form to the specific properties of the material used.
Kuramata became closely associated with this style in 1981 when he joined Ettore Sottsass’s Memphis Group, an Italian collective that included designers such as Michele De Lucchi, Andrea Branzi, and Nathalie du Pasquier.
