Peter HVIDT

The chairs he designed were conceived for export, saving space and packaging for transport. In collaboration with Orla Molgaard-Nielsen, Hvidt created numerous design icons, including the Portex (1945) and Ax (1950) armchairs. Biography Peter Hvidt was born in Denmark in 1916. After studying at the Copenhagen School of Design, he worked in various workshops before founding his own studio in 1942. Two years later, he formed a partnership with Orla Molgaard-Nielsen, with whom he founded Hvidt & Molgaard, a company that closed in 1975. As well as designing iconic pieces of 20th-century design furniture, they also worked on a number of architectural projects in the early 1970s with Hans Kristensen. In particular, they were responsible for the development of multi-family housing in Denmark. He was twice awarded the Diploma of Honor at the Milan Triennale (in 1951 and 1954). His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery in Melbourne and the Danish Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen.
