Herbert is best known for his molded plywood seating designs, which were widely produced by Ercol and other furniture manufacturers in the 1950s and 1960s. He has also worked on design projects for airports, trains and streetcars, as well as interior design projects.
In addition to his design work, Herbert taught industrial design at the Royal College of Art for over 20 years. He was also President of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1997 for his services to industrial design.
