Georges CANDILIS

After studying architecture in Athens, Candilis moved to Paris in 1933 to continue his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts. He worked briefly with Le Corbusier, one of the most influential architects of the time, before joining his studio in 1936.

Candilis collaborated with Le Corbusier on several iconic projects, including the Cité Radieuse in Marseille and the Maison du Brésil in Paris. These experiences profoundly influenced his vision of architecture and helped shape his modern, functionalist approach.

In the 1950s, Candilis founded his own architectural practice in Paris, in partnership with Alexis Josic and Shadrach Woods, forming the famous Candilis-Josic-Woods (CJW) trio. Together, they developed an innovative approach to social housing, emphasizing resident participation and flexible living spaces.

Their work has had a significant impact on urban planning and architecture in France and other countries. They designed modern, functional residential complexes, integrating concepts such as shared green spaces, leisure areas and community facilities.

Georges Candilis also played an important role in architectural education. He was a professor at the Paris-Belleville School of Architecture and influenced many students with his human-centred design philosophy and his commitment to affordable, quality housing.

Over the course of his career, Candilis has completed many remarkable projects, ranging from social housing to tourist complexes and public buildings. His work is recognized for its sensitive and humane approach, as well as for its commitment to innovation and to improving people's quality of life through architecture and design.

Georges Candilis leaves behind a lasting legacy in the field of architecture and design, and his influence continues to inspire many contemporary architects and designers.
