Wilhelm VON BODE

Bode studied art history in Berlin and Munich, and began his career as curator of Berlin's National Museum. He then worked as director of Berlin's Royal Gallery, before becoming director of the Berlin Museum in 1905. During his tenure, he expanded the museum's collection to include works of art from different eras and cultures, and oversaw the construction of a new building to house the collection.

Bode was also a passionate collector, and assembled an extensive collection of art and decorative objects from different eras and cultures. His personal collection was bequeathed to the Berlin Museum after his death, and is now known as the "Bode Museum".

Bode was an advocate of the "museum" approach to art history, which sought to contextualize works of art in their historical and cultural context, rather than viewing them simply as aesthetic objects. His work has influenced many other art historians and curators, and he is regarded as one of the most important advocates of art history in Germany.
