He studied silversmithing at the Zurich School of Applied Arts until 1927. During a lecture by Le Corbusier, he realized that he wanted to become an architect, and so continued his studies at the Bauhaus in Dessau until 1929. In the same year, he organized his first exhibition. He soon attached particular importance to the materials he used. In 1933, he became a member of the Abstraction-Création group, whose aim was to promote abstract art in opposition to the Surrealist movement. By the end of the '30s, he had become an ambassador for concrete art and the use of science and mathematics in art. Max Bill is one of the leading figures among twentieth-century artists and designers.
