About this vintage design furniture

At the age of 75, Gerrit Rietveld designed his last chair for the shop of jeweler Steltman in the Hague the Netherlands. The chair owes its name to the Hague jeweler Steltman, who commissioned Rietveld in 1963 to renovate and furnish his shop at Noordeinde in The Hague. The two mirrored chairs, arranged in front of a display case with jewels, immediately appealed to the imagination. Customers could choose their jewelery and wedding rings from these chairs. In this context, the chairs also acquired a symbolic meaning: two separate, opposing shapes that together form a unity. The asymmetrical chair, which produces a surprising image from every angle, is completely made up of lines and planes. The Steltman is a real design classic! The Steltman chairs in the Steltmans store were covered with white artificial leather. The wooden version was only built after Rietveld’s death in 1964. The chair was built based on Rietveld’s original drawing from 1963. Later the Rietveld Originals brand re issued the chair again and made different versions of the chair. This wooden version is made of oak and white lacquered. No brandmark. Reference : 262498
