History
The chair is the work of Danish designer Niels Otto Møller, which quickly built a reputation for excellent quality and workmanship. Møller's involvement in his craft resulted from his carpentry practice, completed in 1939, followed by further studies at the Århus School of Design. In 1944, Møller founded his own furniture manufacturing company, JL Møllers Møbelfabrik, in a tiny workshop in the center of his hometown. By overseeing the production of traditional furniture in his factory, Møller continued designing. The first result was Chair No. 1 (1946). For the rest of his life, Møller's furniture designs were produced by his own company. Møller's chairs, such as the sculptural No. 55 and No. 71 (both from 1951), strongly represent, through the choice of materials and soft curves, the Scandinavian post-war vision of practical but well-crafted design. In 1952, as the company grew, JL Møllers Møbelfabrik began exporting to Germany and the United States. To keep up with demand, Møller expanded its production facilities. In 1961, he bought a large plot of land in Højbjerg, a town near his hometown. There, Møller continued designing dining chairs and armchairs in carved, organic forms in teak, oak and walnut - patterns of post-war Danish modern style. In 1981, JL Møllers Møbelfabrik received the Dansk MøbelIndustri Furniture Award, with special recognition for "the ability to combine the best craftsmanship traditions with modern furniture production. Niels Otto Møller designed and produced a huge number of chairs and his brand became synonymous around the world with good Danish design. This recommendation was passed on to his children after his death in 1982. His sons, Jorgen Henrik Møller and Jens Ole Møller, ran the company and it remains on behalf of the family to this day.
