Mid-century leather Cromwell sofa by Arne Norell, 1960s

This Cromwell 3-seater leather sofa was designed by Arne Norell during the 1960s. It is a timeless design and as popular today as it was 60 years ago when it was launched. The sofa is upholstered with high-quality natural leather in shades of earthy brown. The slender form with slightly tilted sides has a modernist character. It has loose seat cushions, backrests and side cushions. The legs were made of oak wood. This Cromwell sofa reflects the aesthetics of Danish design of modernist expression, time-honored with many years of tradition. Arne Norell was a Swedish furniture designer who was posthumously awarded the Showpiece of the Year title by the British Furniture Manufacturers in London in 1973 for his Ari armchair. One example of this influence is the Sirocco safari chair. He was an ambitious designer who tried many different combinations of materials and design techniques throughout his career. He was known for his versatile use of wood, leather, fabric and metal in furniture characterized by comfort and ease. In 1958 he founded his own company called Möbel AB Arne Norell. He produced his own designs, believing in his ideas to the end. Currently, pieces of classic Arne Norell furniture are quite rare at art auctions, with prices reaching several thousand dollars. This sofa is in original vintage condition. It has traces of age and a natural patina. The leather has fading, pigment changes, repairs and signs of wear. The seat is 40 cm high.
