Vintage cabinet by Jos de Mey for Van den Berghe Pauvers, Belgium 1960s

A fantastic cabinet designed by Jos De Mey for Van den Berghe-Pouvers in Gent, Belgium, circa 1960. Made of high quality teak wood in a beautiful warm brown colour. The piece has one drop down door, revealing a nice yellow coloured interior with storage units and a small glass shelf. The other doors reveal plenty of additional storage space with wooden interiors and white wooden shelves. Each door opens and closes with a key, the piece has brass details and is labeled on the inside of a door as shown in photos. All together a wonderful find of mid-century design that will definitely draw the attention in the decor It remains in good, vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Jos de Mey was a prominent figure in the furniture scene in Gent, Belgium, working in the Van den Berghe-Pauvers furniture company where he would be bound to until the early 1960s. In the early 1950s, upcoming furniture designers like Emiel Veranneman, Eric Lemesre, and Eric Grinwis worked for the company, but mainly Jos de Mey set the tone for their success. De Mey wanted his furniture to be “sober and honest” and his study at the Gentse Academie has without a doubt been a big influence on his vision. There he was trained by, among others, Geo Bontinck and especially Gaston Eysselinck.
