Statue in painted plaster "Virgin and Child" by Adelaïde Maeterlinck-Lefebvre (1860-1940) Signed and stamped "AML --- Adelaïde Elise Lefèbvre was born on May 04, 1860 in Ghent. She married Louis Maeterlinck, painter and curator at the Museum of Ghent. Gifted sculptor, author of beautiful terracottas. She is known for her audacious nude sculptures. At an exhibition of young Ghent artists at the end of the 19th century, her works were rejected by the jury for being indecent. At a charity auction she presented a young, undressed Bather. The work was again rejected, but was finally accepted after the artist had made a skirt of pearls in white green, evoking raindrops... Ghent Salon (1892): Revelation and Innocence, Brussels Salon (1893): The Kiss and Bonjour (two groups in plaster), Universal Exhibition of Fine Arts in Antwerp (1884): Far from Home, General Exhibition of Fine Arts, Brussels (1887): Bust, in plaster. One of his works, La Nuit, can be seen at the entrance to the Wolfers-Art 1900 room at the Musée du Cinquantenaire in Brussels.
