About this vintage design furniture
Rare Gispen 404 deckchair designed by Willem Hendrik Gispen for Gispen in 1936. He designed this chair for the deck of the passenger ship the S.S. ‘New Amsterdam’ (of the Holland America Line). A chromed frame with Gisolite (bakelite) armrests and a comfortably padded seatreclining cushion. This chair was included in the Gispen program as no.404 in 1937 and was in production in slightly modified form until 1966. This is a rare version from 1953-1966. The rattan on the seat of this armchair was broken here and there and has been professionally repaired and it has been reupholstered with a black leather cushion (see photos). Dimensions: h x w x d 80 x 60 x 100 cm and the seat height is 37 cm. Source: Book W.H. Gispen 1890-1981, page 133 and book W.H. Gispen, 1923-1960, André Koch, page 134. The exact same chair is included in the collection of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
