About this vintage design furniture

This Bastiano leather set of sofa and armchair was designed by Tobia Scarpa and made by the Finnish Haimi manufacture in the 1960s. The frame is made of solid oak in natural tone. The set is very comfortable because it has thick cushions falling into the frame, The cushions have been covered with soft, brown natural leather. The frame acts like a basket that holds pillows together. The back of the sofa and armchair is linear, making this set perfect to be placed centrally in the place that is most appreciated. The Bastiano line is a timeless project. The comfortable appearance matched well with modern and traditional interiors and was one of the most successful designs of this period. Although the Bastiano Lounge models are no longer produced, some designers cite them as an important design point. Mainly due to the successful harmony of soft pillows and a hard exoskeleton. Tobia Scarpa is an award-winning postmodern Italian architect and designer. His works can be found in museums in the United States and Europe, including collections at MoMA and the Louvre. Tobia Scarpa graduated from the University of Venice in 1969 and in the same year won the Compasso d’Oro award for the Soriana armchair designed for Cassina. He has since received many other design awards, and many of his designs can also be found in some of the most important museums in the world, including his Liberta chair on display at the Louvre. As an architect, he worked for both private clients and some of the biggest names in Italian design, including Cassina and Gavina and the Benetton Group, where he designed the famous industrial area and production facilities in Castrette di Villorba (Treviso). Even today, the Benetton facilities are still considered an example of aesthetic-functional excellence, one of the most exciting pieces of industrial architecture in the world. In the early 1960s, Tobia started designing modern furniture based on the principles of Le Corbusier. Together with his wife, Afra, they created an award-winning duo of postmodern Italian architects. The frame of the sofa and armchair is in original vintage condition with minor traces of age and natural patina. The upholstery has been renewed. The seat is 37 cm high. Armchair height 72 cm Width 91 cm Depth 76 cm.
