Robert DUDLEY BEST

Despite the company's pride in offering traditional lamps to a prestigious clientele, including the Titanic and Orient Express, Dudley Best turned its attention to a new collection that symbolized the spirit of the new age, calling on the most avant-garde architects and establishing a new era in lamp design. Robert Dudley Best was strongly influenced by the Bauhaus movement, which was taking Europe by storm with its strict lines and pared-down style. Following Bauhaus principles, Dudley Best removed trim and detail from traditional Best & Lloyd products. He had both commercial and domestic use in mind, and believed that lighting should be functional and practical as well as elegant. With this in mind, he returned to Birmingham in 1930, determined to put his Bestlite lamp into production.
