Tom Dixon is an English designer. He is famous for his atypical career, his rebel universe and his avant-gardist style. His design combines industrial shapes, raw materials and craft.
His creations are characterized by a real originality and a perfect alliance between creativity and commercial. Passionate about materials such as steel, iron and brass, he also appreciates to use copper because it is a way to play with light. The S-chair (1991) and the Fat low armless chair (1991) are considered as legendary. Biography Tom Dixon was born in 1959 in Tunisia and moved up to England at the age of 4. He studied at the Chelsea School of Art. He became guitarist of rock band until a serious motorcycle accident. During this long convalescence period, he discovered another passion: welding. It is the starting point of a designer career. This self-made man quickly met with an impressive success. In 2002, he founded his own design agency. He was the artistic director for Habitat (a big French company specialized in home furniture) and Artek, a famous company founded by Alvar Aalto. His creations are exhibited in the best museum including the MoMa and the London Design Museum. In 2014, he was elected as the designer of the year by the Home and Maison & Objets Show. He is one of the most original designers.
