About this vintage design furniture

Large beige and dark blue ceramic vase from Mari Simmulson's most popular Atoll range in 1966 for Upsala Ekeby, Sweden. The vase has a central unglazed part with a rough, rustic surface and a bright blue glazed part. Delicate, swollen shape. Good vintage condition and nice scandinavian design. Measures: 45.5 cmH, 23.5 cmD. Weight: about 2 kg. Labelled: EU Sweden, 6057M. Small chip barely visible on the top edge. See picture Mari Simmulson (1911-2000) was born to Estonian parents in St. Petersburg, Russia. During the Russian Revolution of 1917, the family returned to Estonia. In the 1930s Mari studied at the National Art School in Tallinn and furthered her education at the Arabia porcelain factory in Helsinki. Mari Simmulson is one of the best-known representatives of Swedish ceramic design in the 20th century. She was one of the leading designers for Gustavsberg and Upsala-Ekeby in the 1940s and 60s.

About the designer

Mari SIMMULSON

Marie Simmulson was a Swedish designer born in 1911 in St Petersburg, Russia. She moved to Sweden in 1915 with her family, where she studied at the Göteborg School of Decorative Arts. She went on to study at the Konstfack School of Art in Stockholm, graduating in 1936.
