About this vintage design furniture
This chair was part of the very first (rare) series of the iconic 860-861 model of the "Universale" by Joe Colombo. It is recognizable by the wings on the side, and the different stamp of the following editions (4867): "Kartell® Binasco (Milano) 860 e 861 (5) Made in Italy. Design - Prof. Joe Colombo". The shapes have a functional justification for stacking and the central hole provides a comfortable grip for moving it, while allowing air and water to circulate when used outdoors. Considered a staple of 1960s design, it is featured in the permanent exhibitions of prestigious museums such as MoMa in New York and the Beaubourg Centre in Paris. Sturdy, stackable and produced in a variety of colours, it reflects the particularly strong enthusiasm in Italy at the end of the 1960s for modern plastic furniture, as suggested by the name of the model "Universale", the chair can be used indoors or outdoors.
