About this vintage design furniture
Finmar retailer's label on the underside. Kakkonen" stacking chair no. 2. 15. Finland. 1930s. Made by Oy Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Ab, Turku, Finland. An example of Aalto's formative years and early designs, this chair is made of solid birch and laminate and retains its original black finish. Designed jointly by Alvar Aalto and Otto Korhonen in 1930, this chair has been produced over the years in four different versions. This version is the rarest of the four. The design is similar to the other versions, as the front legs protrude to the side. However, the front edge of the seat of this version is formed with a more severe right angle (the other version with protruding legs was rounded at the front). It also has a small decorative wedge, seen from the front, reminiscent of traditional Chinese chairs.
