About this vintage design furniture
Oval ceramic plate depicting a mermaid and a navy captain transformed into a mermaid, designed and produced by Giovanni De Simone in Sicily in the 1960s. In very good condition. Ceramist born in Palermo in 1930 and active between Rome and Palermo, where he has a laboratory called "Majolica d’Arte De Simone", Giovanni De Simone realizes, starting from the second post-war years, hand-painted floor and wall tiles, objects of use for furnishings and majolica sculptures in traditional and modern style inspired by primitivism, but revisited in a light-hearted key and characterized by the use of full-bodied enamels, in bright colors. The artist’s creative imagination is inspired by Sicilian folklore and traditions and by the great masters of Modern Art such as Picasso, Matisse, Leger and Klee. De Simone’s unique style has become international, enjoying particular success throughout Europe and also in Australia and the United States.
