Vintage beechwood lowboard by Jiří Jiroutek for Interiér Praha, Czechoslovakia 1960
About this vintage design furniture
Mid-century buffet-cabinet, catalog #U-450, designed by Jiri Jiroutek. It is made of beech wood, veneer, plywood and laminate. In excellent condition, completely renovated. The cabinet comes from the famous Universal series (U-450), which was designed in 1958 for the Czechoslovak national company Interiér Praha by Czech designer Jiří Jiroutek. The success of the Czech pavilion at Brussels Ex-'58 was followed by the rise of the modernist style (called "Brussels style" in Czechoslovakia). One of the most important representatives of the Brussels style are the cabinets and chests of drawers of the U-450 series, with their typical pastel colors and sloping legs. In Czechoslovakia in the 1960s and 1970s, they could be found in almost every modern home. These cabinets were unique not only in their design, but also in their technological innovation, which allowed their mass production and availability at a time when the demand for furniture was very high in Czechoslovakia. These cabinets were one of the first to be manufactured from pre-prepared parts, from which they were then assembled. This same technological process helped to reduce the price of furniture and develop companies such as IKEA. This cabinet is an original from the 1960s, we have completely renovated it to meet current standards.
