About this vintage design furniture

An original 6-8 seat black metal and textured glass vintage Cassina LC6 table originally designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand. Born in Switzerland in 1887 Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier, is widely considered as one of the pioneers of what we recognise now as Modern Architecture. As an architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer his career spanned five decades and influenced many of the greatest designers of the 20th Century. Incidentally, you might wonder where his professional name came from, I certainly did; it comes from an adaptation of his Grandmother’s surname, Lecorbésier which translates into English as ‘the crow like one’. Although not primarily concerned with furniture design he is nonetheless credited with creating some of the most iconic pieces of furniture ever produced – the vast majority of which was conceived of in only a short period between 1928-29 in collaboration with the architect Charlotte Perriand and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret. The most famous of these designs were two chairs: the Grand Confort (LC3) (1928–29), a club chair with a tubular frame and the Chaise Longue, (LC4) (1928–29), a low seat suspended in a tubular steel frame – both clearly showed the influence of Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer and were produced at that time by Thonet. Less well known, but also designed in the same period was the LC6 table which used a different production technique. The original design used aeronautical steel, which was carefully welded for a seamless finish with sculpted angles and smooth, mitered corners. This was most often complimented with a thick glass top that was raised on adjustable mounts so it could be perfectly matched in height to a range of chairs. This is more important than you might think as the relationship between seat height and table height is often overlooked and is one of the biggest mistakes buyers make when matching a table to a set of chairs as it directly relates to the comfort of your dining position. The table is supplied with original crystal glass top. The textured glass is an expensive option offered by Cassina but in my opinion elevates the design to a different level as it casts wonderfully subtle shadows and reflections around it. The table base is impressed with the original Cassina mark and production number and is in very good vintage condition with just a few knocks and marks commensurate with age and use. The glass top has no chips out of the edge or in the top, and although showing light useage marks, has no major scratches to speak of. Although, by virtue of its size, it is capable of seating 8 (depending on the choice of chairs) it was originally designed as a comfortable 6 seat table. In this respect it’s been cleverly designed to fit 2 chairs between the leg supports on either side with a chair at each end that can tuck under into the recesses. It is shown in the last 2 pictures with a set of 6 Mies van der Rohe Knoll MR10 chairs which in my opinion are a perfect match for the table – not least because both the table and chairs were originally designed around the same time. The table is available for purchase on a standalone basis via this listing but can also be purchased as a set with the MR10’s via another one of my other listings on this website. Dimensions Height adjustable to 69-75cm X W225 X D85cm
