ARP (Motte, Mortier, Guariche)

Plastic Research Workshop

When the group was founded, the three designers wanted to shake up the codes of classicism by designing new shapes to create more accessible furniture. Major pieces of twentieth-century furniture have emerged from this new and fruitful association. Examples include a series of storage units for Minvielle, and armchairs for Steiner.

Biography

Joseph-André Motte (1925 - 2013) and Michel Mortier (1925 - 2015) both trained in the Applied Arts, while Pierre Guariche (1926 - 1995) graduated from the Decorative Arts. The three met while working at designer Marcel Gascoin's agency. In 1954, they took part in the Salon des Arts Ménagers and realized that they had a common desire to found an association, notably with the aim of creating a series of furniture desired by the publisher Charles Minvielle. The three designers won numerous prizes in a competition organized by the Centre Technique du Bois. The idea was to design practical furniture that would easily fit into small spaces. The Atelier de Recherche Plastique came to an end in 1957.
