About this vintage design furniture

A superb vintage Danish Børge Mogensen extending drop leaf desk in bent Beech wood and teak with scissor legs and produced in 1957 by Søborg (Frederica) Møbelfabrik.Vintage This is an unusual desk by Mogensen that dates from the earlier part of his stellar career as one of the greats of Danish Mid century design. Unusual in that you wouldn’t normally associate such a design with him as his design ethos was more practical and utilitarian that esoteric; he also didn’t create many designs in bent wood. In fact, with the drop leaves and the scissor legs, it is very reminiscent of Hans Wegner’s design work and no doubt each were influenced by the other as they rubbed shoulders in the Danish design world. Beautiful but also practical, the desk has two lockable draws (the original key that locks both draws is included) as well as two independently operated extension leaves that simply fold up and lock in position with the benefit of the sliding wood supports. It is possible that it’s intended use was as a dining table but the fact that the draws are lockable and that is has a ‘face’ (most desks are placed against a wall so generally have a front facing elevation) suggests that it must have been designed as a desk in the first instance. It has a really striking organic shape and looks impressive from any angle, so if you are looking for a free standing desk to sit centre stage in a room it definitely fits the bill. It’s presented in good vintage condition with a few knocks and marks to the table top and legs as you would expect, but nothing at all that detracts from its appeal. It is in untouched vintage condition and could of course be polished more, but it has such a natural and even vintage look I considered it was best to leave it in it’s found condition. In essence it’s a useful sized desk that can be adapted to most sized spaces making it ideal as a stylish home workstation. It is easily and quickly extended and on that basis could also work well as a small meeting room table – you simply extend a leaf or two as required and with both leaves extended it would comfortably seat 6, or 8 at a push. Alternatively, you can extend the leaves to create more table top work space and as the leaves extend past the width of the supporting legs it also allows for storage space underneath. Dimensions H73.5 X W1 142, W2 178, W3 213 X D89cm Front seating aperture: Clearance height from floor to the bottom of draws - 60cm Width of aperture between supporting legs - 109cm Depth of aperture to main horizontal support stretcher – 42cm
