About this vintage design furniture

Largest edition of the PH-Artichoke pendant with brushed stainless steel shades designed by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, Denmark, design 1957, production 1970s. This iconic pendant has 72 brushed steel shades in twelve layers of 6 shades that are very precisely placed from on another. The shades are brushed steel on the outside and enameled in rosewhite on the inside. This warm rosewhite paint creates the warm and effective light partition and delicate rose colored shine on the shades, which makes it almost look bronze. The light is in very good condition. The artichoke by Poul Henningsen was designed in 1957 for the Langelinie Pavilion in Copenhagen, which was executed in copper. The steel version was manufactured from the mid-1970s, while the white Artichoke was introduced in the early 1980s. The first PH lamp was the result of Poul Henningsen’s ten year attempts at to shade and control electrical lightning. Henningsen noticed several problems with the new electrical light economic, hygienic and aesthetic. Henningsen was also very invested in glare, the color of the light and shadow and believed that it was necessary to estimate distance and to perceive the shape of an object. After years of experimentation he came to the complex use of different shades on top of one another. Literature: - Jørsten, Tina and Poul Erik Munk Nielsen. Light Years Ahead. The Story of the PH Lamp. Copenhagen: 2000, p. 276 - 278. Measures: Ø 84 cm.
