Jean-Michel Frank is one of the most important French designers from the 20th Century. His unique and precursor style is referred to as “luxury from nothing”.
His creations are characterized by the originality of the materials used. For the realization of his pieces, he used shagreen, parchment but also terra cotta for example. The Comfortable sofa and the cubic vase are nowadays renowned pieces. Biography Jean-Michel Frank was born in 1895 in Paris. After his Bachelor, he studied law. Quickly, he became interested in art and literature then in interior design. He was responsible of the layout of the Pierre Drieu la Rochelle’s house. He quickly met with great success thanks to his unique style. Then, great figures asked him to be in charge of the interior design of their apartments: Viscount Charles de Noailles (1924), the writer Nancy Cunard and the famous fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli (1927). He was appointed artistic director of the Chanaux & Cie establishments. He left France for Argentine then for New-York where he took his own life. Jean-Michal Frank profoundly marked the history of design by his innovative style.
