Vintage Tapta tapestry wall art 1973

Maria Wierusz-Kowalski aka Tapta arrived in Belgium as a political refugee at the age of 18. After graduating from the Atelier d Art du Tissu in La Cambre in 1949, she moved to Equatorial Africa for ten years. During her stay she experimented with textiles soaked in different materials that would deeply mark her work. Initially she devoted her work to textile creations, sometimes with the help of ropes. Her last major creation in that area was entitled Voutes flexibles (1983-1985), in the Veeweyde metro station in Brussels. From 1980 Tapta made a radical change in her work to break with a method that she considered easy, decorative and embedded in the textile art. She chose to challenge industrial materials such as rubber, concrete and sheet metal. Tapta took over the supervision of the Atelier d Art Textile at the La Cambre Institute in 1976, renaming it Sculpture Souple in line with Robert Morris and his Anti Form, which questions the solid nature of contemporary sculpture. This later work was also exposed at the Veranneman foundation. This hanging sculptural work dates from 1973 and is made out of thick ropes. The work is attached on a wooden tube that can easily be attached to the wall. Very decorative work in an excellent condition. Signed and dated Tapta 1973.
