Joe COLOMBO

A prolific designer, his pieces are still legendary today. They have stood the test of time while retaining their modernity. An innovator, he was the first to use single-block molded plastic for his legendary Universale armchair (1967). His commitment to modularity led him to create the Tube-Chair and Multi-chair in 1969 and 1970 respectively. Biography Joe Colombo was born in Italy in 1930. He studied painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, then architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. He began his career as a painter and member of the Movimento Nucleare. Following the death of his father in 1959, he took over the family business and began a career in design. Three years later, he founded his own design agency. His focus was on everyday furniture and the functions to which it aspires: modularity and flexibility. To this he added his "anti-design" vision: design should take precedence over architectural lines. His futuristic style quickly caught on. He was awarded prizes such as the Compasso d'Oro. Colombo left a profound mark on the history of design.
